“Words! Mere words! How terrible they were! How clear, and vivid, and cruel! One could not escape from them. And yet what a subtle magic there was in them! They seemed to be able to give a plastic form to formless things, and to have a music of their own as sweet as that of viol or of lute. Mere words! Was there anything so real as words?”

Friday Sept 29
We watched the two "Creation" scenes from he 1931 and the 1994 versions. I was also encouraged to watch the newest version with Daniel Radcliffe as Igor.
We also got the Theme Study document and chatted about that. We'll continue to do that into next week.
Friday! Woo!
Thurs Sept 28
So today we read to the end of Chapter Four ... things are starting to get interesting. For example, we learned about the Secret of Life today while reading the novel.
Well, sort of.
We also got these for homework:
And then, well class ended.

Wed Sept 27
Well, it was a weird schedule today.
We did get the reading in, and we read to page 37 in the textbook. I even did some Ahnold reading - that is reading the text in the voice of Mr Swarzenegger.
It was pretty epic.
In any case, we got through the reading for the day and we talked about some of the ideas coming from the text: allusions and modern day examples, too. We also spoke about how the point of view changed ... again.

Tuesday Sept 26
So ... where the red pointy thing is Archangel, Russia. Basically, that's where Robert Walton starts his story of Frankenstein.
We talked about the Point of View again and about some of the vocabulary and meaning of passages of the novel. Honestly, it's an awesome thing to do; lots of help, too.
We collected the Webquest on Frankenstein, too.
A great day!

Fri Sept 22
Today we ended one unit and started the next. I did start off by pointing out that the Webquest for Frankenstein was due on Tuesday.
I got back the tests and the presentation notes and marks to the students today.
We chatted briefly about the results and I took questions and we got a chance to discuss the results.
After that, we officially started the next unit on Frankenstein. We read to the end of the first letter.

Tues Sept 19
Right on. We keep moving forward.
Today is getting really really close to the end of the Stories Unit in this class. We did a few more of the Task Two presentations and did some work on the essay together.
I was asked to post a Google Drive copy of my Essay outline handout.
I also reminded students that there is a webquest on the next unit due soon as well.
Then we did a brief poking around on Twitter for Frankenstein, our next unit.

Wednesday and Thursday Sept 14
Whoops.
Ok, I'll get two posts done for the price of one. Wednesday we did The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. Some one told me about a short film version - see below.
Thursday we did two presentations and did a bit of essay writing - see above. We also chatted about a short quiz for the unit for tomorrow as well.

Tues Sept 12
So .. today. Today we read a difficult text for our story for the day, entitled "The Birthmark" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It was a great preview for the way that Mary Shelley wrote "Frankenstein", one of the major works in this course.
By the way ... this is a helpful video for a part of that novel:

Thursday Sept 7
Today we had a Grade 11 presentation in the cafeteria and missed most of today as a class.
When we returned, we got about a half hour into the next "Short Piece" for this unit. Namely, it was Fahrenheit 451, the film. We wondered at some of the special effects of this film, put out in the late 60's. It was a pretty fun thing to do. We'll continue with this tomorrow.

Wed Sept 6
Today, doing much better on keeping this updated.
We read the short story "The Interlopers" by Saki and were assigned the terms and the questions for work in class.
We had a few minutes to get that done then we went through a few of the articles for the Short Piece Unit presentations, on the right-hand side of the blog. All is good. I also showed an example of the Powerpoint "deck" that was to be handed in as a part of the presentation.
*you can use other presentation software - just ask ahead of time!
Then, I posted the due dates for the first unit.

Man, this post is late.
We started the course - got the various sheets handed out and talked about this blog and the first unit.
Oh and the "Getting to know you" forms, too.
