Wed Dec 20

So we read to page 143 today.

We got questions 25 and 26 for homework, then chatted about the Essay Outline that is the next thing for the CA.

We also chatted about due dates for the CA, too.

I'll be posting a rubric for the seminar I was given, and I'll also post an example of what my students should be doing for it.

Tuesday Dec 19

So ... today we did our short quiz on Part One of Dorian Gray.

It was cool, my mom said so. ;)

We didn't have any time by the end of class, but we did chat about the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster trip next month. Please consider going to see one of the nicest campuses in Ontario.

Right. On to tomorrow.

Also posted the Theme Study here and in the Helpful Links on the right hand side.

Monday Dec 18

I'm not there today.

You have to do the following for this part of Dorian Gray:

For the following sight passage, respond in proper paragraph form, and include the following:

  • The text and author included in a topic sentence.
  • The speaker and the character(s) being addressed.
  • The context of the passage.
  • Two main elements of significance (character development, themes, literary devices etc.), with specific references from the passage to support your claims.
  • A thoughtful concluding sentence.

"They must interest you, Dorian. Every gentleman is interested in his good name. You don’t want people to talk of you as something vile and degraded. Of course you have your position, and your wealth, and all that kind of thing. But position and wealth are not everything. Mind you, I don’t believe these rumors at all. At least, I can’t believe them when I see you. Sin is a thing that writes itself across a man’s face. It cannot be concealed. People talk of secret vices. There are no such things as secret vices. If a wretched man has a vice, it shows itself in the lines of his mouth, the droop of his eyelids, the moulding of his hands even."

I reminded students what stuff is due on Monday and what is expected for progress on the CA. We are still going to finish that after Christmas.

Thursday Dec 14

So ... we're keeping this reading nice and boring.

We're mentioning and discussing the novel as we go through it; Dorian is making a lot of references in Chapter 11 to stuff he's done in the years that are flying by in these pages.

Some of the references are ... more than little too much for this class, but that is Oscar Wilde.

We got to page 117, by the way.

Wed Dec 13

So ... this was the third day that we've just straight up read the book and been able to chata bout it together as a group.

I gotta say, I'm impressed with some of the ideas we are having.

Of course, others are working on their science and their IG at the same time.

So sad. At least we got to page 107 in the text.

Anyway, we got question 24 and 25 for homework for tomorrow.

I will also remind students not to lose the conference sheets for the CA that we worked on together last week.

Peace.

The past is in the past. Right? Isn't it? Riiiiiight

Tuesday Dec 12

Questions we are responsible for so far....

I'm trying to keep this as positive as possible ...

we read to the start of Chapter 9, page 94.

We also talked about Imogen and her role in Cymbeline, the play by Shakespeare.

We also figured out the due date for Part 1 of Dorian Gray. It's going to be due Dec 18th, next Tuesday.

Monday Dec 11

S we read until Page 82, to the end of chapter 7. We got the following questions to do:

1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 20 and 21.

In the scenes that we read, the author mentions two characters: Juliet and Miranda. Here is a scene of Juliet meeting Romeo:

and some background on Miranda:

Friday Dec 8

So ... we finished all the CA conferences ...

#awesomesauce.

We then got some reading of Dorian Gray done too. To page 68. We will talk about a due date for Part 1 of Dorian on Monday.

I also mentioned this test to someone today during conferences.

Thursday Dec 7

We are almost finished both the CA Conferences and this week of Half and half with Dorian Gray. Tomorrow is the last day for conferences and we are basically on time.

We'll do the last six conferences tomorrow.

We read to page 62 in Dorian Gray and watched the movie to about minute 1:20. A lot of good work there, to be honest.

We'll finish strong tomorrow and make our lives that much better for everyone.

Wed Dec 6

We continue working on the CA and the Dorian units.

We are cool.

Make sure your Readers Notes are in before you get/ask for a conference with the teacher. Conferences will finish this Friday.

Tues Dec 5

niceonedad.com

So we kept up our "dual" schedule again today - it is working quite nicely.

I do have quite the lack of Reader's Notes, however. That IS disturbing.

We also read to the end of Chapter 3 of Dorian. We got the following for homework, too:

Monday, December 4, 2017

Mon Dec 4

So we got through the first of the conferences for the CA today.

I think I got five or six done. Should be awesome moving forward.

Right, after that, we got to Page 38 in the text and got questions 1, 2, 5, 6 and 8 from the Unit outline for homework.

#doriangray

I did get a chance to chat with someone about the 2009 film version and just how much "No!" I would be getting if I tried to show it in class. There are a lot of reasons why I can't show that version, trust me.

Or don't trust me and go find out for yourself. ;)

OK - on to tomorrow!

Friday Dec 1

We finished our Book Club Discussions today - they went ok, for the most part. I'm glad we did get a chance to do this process, but I'm not sure it went the way I had foreseen.

After that, we got to read Dorian Gray; we got to page 31. Dorian bet his soul ... or made a deal with his soul so that he wouldn't age and the painting would.

So ... yeah, making a deal for your soul isn't a good idea; it's hard to get out of the deal, but easy to get yourself into it. I mentioned the film Crossroads in class as an example of a film where you could see a parallel story of making the deal and then life not going the way intended.

Watch this really cool part of that film with headphones. it's really good:

Thur Jan 25

I'm currently sitting in the library at BR, I'll be leaving at about 11:30am
