We finished our Book Club Discussions today - they went ok, for the most part. I'm glad we did get a chance to do this process, but I'm not sure it went the way I had foreseen.
After that, we got to read Dorian Gray; we got to page 31. Dorian bet his soul ... or made a deal with his soul so that he wouldn't age and the painting would.
So ... yeah, making a deal for your soul isn't a good idea; it's hard to get out of the deal, but easy to get yourself into it. I mentioned the film Crossroads in class as an example of a film where you could see a parallel story of making the deal and then life not going the way intended.
Watch this really cool part of that film with headphones. it's really good:
“Words! Mere words! How terrible they were! How clear, and vivid, and cruel! One could not escape from them. And yet what a subtle magic there was in them! They seemed to be able to give a plastic form to formless things, and to have a music of their own as sweet as that of viol or of lute. Mere words! Was there anything so real as words?”
